The town of Buena Vista (47 miles away) held a hot air balloon festival called Balloona Vista. After dark the balloons were inflated and the light from the gas jets made the balloons glow.
The heyday for Colorado's small towns was in the 1870's and 1880's. Everywhere we looked there were rotting ranch houses, abandoned towns, and reoccupied towns; all probably dating from that era. Could this also have been the era of the coal powered cars?
We followed dirt roads that took us to arches, canyons, lakes, waterfalls, rapids, historic mining districts, and even some petrified tree stumps.
We didn't do as much hiking here as we would have expected. We were too busy playing tourist. One foray took us through the aspens to a formation called Lizard Rock. Another started in the high country at 12,500' and went up (and down) from there. We were joined on this hike by some of our new friends.
