Kayaking in Spokane

We spent a couple of leisurely hours paddling the still waters of a lake that is two miles downriver from our camp. An old hydroelectric dam backs the water into a lake about 4 miles long that is confined in the river canyon.

Patty is a "bird person", and she got to see some good ones on our kayak trip. There were several ospray nests along the shore and one was full of babies. We couldn't see into the nest, but when momma flew by with a fish in her talons, no one could miss the squawking. We got pretty good closeups of several of osprays, but we weren't ready when she flew by with her prize! We also drifted right up to a blue heron that put on a ballet for us. We'd be paddling along and a duck would come skimming down the river at full speed, about a foot off the water. We'd watch him until he was out of sight around the next bend and try to guess how fast he was going (30 mph?).
